How do I know what size mattress my RV takes?
Measure the sleeping platform itself, inside any side rails, at both ends and in the middle, then measure the vertical clearance to whatever is above it. The size name in your paperwork is a label the builder chose, not a specification you can order from.
What is the difference between an RV queen and a short queen?
An RV queen is 60 by 80 inches, the same as a residential queen. A short queen is 60 by 75. Same width, five inches of length apart, and that difference is where the bedroom slide travels.
Can I put a regular household mattress in an RV?
Only where the coach size matches a residential size exactly, which happens with RV twin and RV queen and almost never with RV king, three-quarter or bunk beds. Overhang is not cosmetic in a coach: it blocks slides and doors.
Is a topper or a new mattress the right fix?
A topper changes surface feel and adds cushion. It cannot correct a mattress that has already collapsed, because it follows the dip underneath. If the old mattress holds a body impression with nothing on it, replace it.
Why does a new foam mattress smell?
Foam commonly has an odor after unboxing that fades with air circulation over a few days. In a coach or a van there is far less air to dilute it, so unbox with windows and vents open and give it time before the first night.
How thick should the mattress be?
Whatever fits under the slide and the overhead cabinets, minus room for bedding. That clearance is a hard ceiling. Comfort is chosen underneath it, not above it.
Do foam mattresses need a special base in an RV?
They need continuous support. A slatted platform with wide gaps lets all-foam mattresses sag between the slats, and in vans and boats the base also has to allow airflow so condensation can dry.
Can a mattress help with back pain?
Support and firmness affect how comfortable a night is, and many owners replace a collapsed factory mattress for that reason. Persistent back pain is a question for a clinician rather than for a buying guide, and no product on this site is presented as treatment.
